Shape Series

The Shape-Series consciously rejects the established rules of the traditional craft of blacksmithing whilst appreciating its undeniable roots. Key aspects of traditional craftsmanship surround reproducibility. In blacksmithing, such reproducibility is supported by designs comprised of straight lines and right angles. Shape-Series consciously denies such simple geometrics, staying away from established forms and ornamentation. Rather, it seeks to better appreciate the material by allowing the forms to grow in an organic fashion. Fire and manual hammering for each piece, utilising an array of different source scrap metals, create one-off textures and colours. Working with the metal, rather than against, and the gratitude toward the laws imbedded in the material, serve to allow scrap metal to flourish into its own ‘genuine’ ornament.
